Current Wimbledon champion and British number one Andy Murray sealed his first victory since returning to competitive play following his back operation in September. Murray defeated Stanislas Wawrinka on the second day of the Mubadala World Tennis exhibition Championship held at the Tennis Complex in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi (26th – 28th December).

After a defeat against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-3 in his first match on Thursday, Murray’s win against Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4 yesterday saw him finish in fifth place overall in the Abu Dhabi event. This tournament was the first time Murray has played since his Davis Cup World Group playoff matches against Croatia back in September before his surgery.

The 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year said “It’s good to get two matches against top players,” said Murray. “It’s been a perfect start.” He added “I feel pretty good; a lot better than I did a few months ago. I just need to play more matches like this because the intensity’s a lot higher than you can get in practice.” (BBC Sport)

David Ferrer beat Wawrinka 7-5, 6-1 in their first match and then taking full advantage of the fast surface defeated World number one Rafael Nadal in the all spanish clash 6-4, 6-4 to secure his place in the final against defending champion Novak Djokovic. Tsonga lost out to Djokovic 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in their match.

Watched by his new coach and tennis legend Boris Becker, Djokovic claimed victory beating Ferrer 7-5, 6-2 in the final earlier today to claim his third consecutive win and the $250,000 prize in the winner-takes-all tournament. Nadal beat Tsonga 7-6(5) 6-3 to finish in third place overall.

Murray, ranked fourth in the world, returns to competition in the Exxon Mobil Open held in Qatar next week as part of his preparations for the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on 13th January and will be joined in the event by Nadal. Djokovic has announced he will not play in any other warm-up events ahead of the first grand slam of the year.
