World Tennis News: Game Over

British number one Andy Murray was knocked out of the Australian Open by a focused and on form Roger Federer in their quarter-final showdown. Federer came out all guns blazing to dash Murray’s hopes of adding the Australian Open title to his Grand Slam trophy haul.

It took Federer, 32 just under three and a half hours to win in four sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 and confirm his eleventh consecutive semi-final place at the event and set up an encounter against top seed and world number one Rafael Nadal tomorrow. Murray had his moments in the match when he won the third set tie-break and saved six break points in a marathon game that lasted nineteen minutes in the fourth set.

“I was proud of the way I fought,” said Murray as reported on BBC sports website, Federer added “Andy played well and put the pressure on me so I’m happy to get the win,” he said.

In the first semi-final played earlier today, Stanislas Wawrinka reached his first Grand Slam final after beating Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) and will play face the victor of the Federer/Nadal match. In the women’s event fourth seed Na Li from China will face Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova seeded twenty in Saturdays final at the Rod Laver Arena.
