Totally Tennis performance player Liam Hignett qualified for his first National Grade 2 tournament (based on ranking first, not rating) playing in the Sheffield Junior Open held at the Graves Tennis & Leisure Centre.
Hignett won his first match in the Boys 14 and Under singles competition, beating Oliver Hobson 6-0 6-1, then in the second round he played number six seed Euan Wilson-Baig who is ranked 14th Nationally for the under 14s (seventy places higher than Hignett). Hignett won the first set 6-4, was 3-0 up in the second set, but Wilson-Baig won six games in a row to win the set 6-3. In the tie break to 10, Hignett was 4-0 up but in the end lost 10-7.
Donella, mum of Liam who accompanied him to Sheffield said “It was a shame he lost, but good to see him competing with someone at that high standard.”
Hignett then teamed up with Wilson-Baig for the Boys 14 and under doubles and after a bye in round one the boys lost in their quarter final match 6-2, 6-4 to James Wilkinson and Ross Martin.
