In a shock defeat British number one and top seed Andy Murray lost in the quarter-finals of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam against Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-2. In the final, fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland beat defending champion Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win the title.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is currently in progress (15th – 28th February) at the Dubai Duty Free Stadium which is spilt into a women week taking place now and the men’s competition next week. World number one Serena Williams pulled out of the event due to an ongoing respiratory illness that has troubled her for a while as has Canadian Eugenie Bouchard who was a Wimbledon finalist. British number one Heather Watson suffered a disappointing start to the WTA event losing in the first round to Kateryna Kozlova (world ranking 132) 6-4, 7-5. Defending champions Venus Williams and Roger Federer will both be appearing in their respective events and alongside six-time champion Federer, four-time winner Novak Djokovic and recent two-time finalist Berdych and Murray will all be competing.
