The Queen Mary’s College (QMC) tennis team started their 2015 National Championships (previously known as The Glanvill Cup) campaign last week with the Boys B team taking on Bradfield College. This was always going to be a very tough match for the QMC boys and although the results were very one sided, the boys acquitted themselves well on Bradfield’s indoor courts, which is the same as the Australian Open surface.
(L to R) Joseph Lane, Chris Yarney, Matt Rennie, Patrick Lincoln-Ohrstrand and Ellis Wyles
In the singles, Ellis Wyles, Matt Rennis and Joseph Lane all lost their matches lost 6-0, 6-0 and Patrick Lincoln-Ohstrand lost 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles both pairs of Wyles/Rennis and Lincoln-Ohstrand/Chris Yarney lost 6-0, 6-0.
QMC PE teacher and tennis team manager Sarah Goldson said “Ellis was playing in his first match for the college and found himself facing a player rated 2.2 against his 9.1. He played very well despite the gulf in ratings and got better and better as the match went on.”
The Boys A team will play Ewell Castle in their first round match on Wednesday 25th March with the Girls Team taking on St Catherine’s School on Wednesday 29th April in the Girls National Championships (previously The Aberdare Cup).
