British number one Andy Murray is through to his fifth French Open quarter-final beating France’s Jeremy Chardy after being a break down in the third set to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and will now face seventh seed David Ferrer, who defeated ninth seed Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. Murray had beat big-hitting Australian Nick Kyrgios in straight sets in the previous round 6-4, 6-2. 6-3 in a crowd entertaining match. Roger Federer has beaten Gaël Monfils 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga defeated fourth seed Tomas Berdych to reach the last eight along with Kei Nishlkori (5) and Stan Wawrinka (8). Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal also all play today in a busy Monday at the French Open.
Over in the women’s draw it was game over for defending champion Maria Sharapova after a shock defeat in the fourth round by thirteenth seed Lucie Safarova 7-6, 6-4. Safarova progresses to the quarter-finals for the first time in her career and will face twenty-first seed Garbine Muguruzafro Blanco from Spain in the last eight who defeated Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4. Seventh seed Ana Ivanovic is also through as well as Elina Svitonlina (19) and Sara Errani (17). Top seed Serena Williams has just beaten Sloane Stephens 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 to book her quarter-final place.
