British number one Andy Murray is the only British player through to the second week of The Championships, Wimbledon 2015 after beating Andreas Seppi from Italy in four sets 6-2 6-2 1-6 6-1 to set up a fourth-round match with twenty-third seed Ivo Karlovic from Croatia.
Playing in his first Grand Slam third round match British wildcard James Ward lost after leading by two sets to Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 8-6 in just over three hours today. The most exciting match in British number one Heather Watson’s career to date ended in a narrow defeat against World number one Serena Williams 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. In the thrilling match, with the Centre Court crowd in full vocal support, Watson gave a fantastic account of herself winning the second set and nearly pulling off a shock defeat of Williams, a confidence boast even though the final scoreline did not go her way. Williams will now face her sister Venus in round 4 in the all American family showdown.
World number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic is through to the fourth round without dropping a set and is joined by French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, seven-time champion Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych. Rafael Nadal made a shock first week exit after dreadlocked qualifier Dustin Brown from Germany beat him in four sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Marin Cilic beat John Isner to book his place in week two.
In another shock defeat defending women’s champion Petra Kvitova was defeated by Jelena Jankovic who joins Maria Sharapova in the fourth round. Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki is through to the last sixteen after beating Camila Giorgi from Italy and will now face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
