Fresh from their Wimbledon semi-final and finalist achievements Andy and Jamie Murray will now represent the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team GB in this weekend’s fixture against France starting today. Britain beat the USA 3-2 in Glasgow earlier this year in March to reach the last eight and the team are attempting to reach the World Group semi-final stage for the first time since 1981. The winners of this weekend’s tie will face Australia or Kazakhstan in September and Britain are guaranteed a home tie should they make the cut.
In today’s singles matches James Ward faces Gilles Simon in the opening match of this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas quarter-final at Queen’s Club in the best-of-five tie at followed by British number one Andy against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Jamie and Dom Inglot are scheduled to face Nicolas Mahut and Richard Gasquet in the doubles tomorrow but team captain Leon Smith can change the team up to one hour before play.
The French team are no easy opponents with three of their players in the World’s top thirteen players with number 11 (Simon), 12 (Tsonga) and 13 (Gasquet) all in the team and their lowest ranked player Mahut is world number 22 in doubles and current Queen’s Club doubles champion. Obviously Team GB has Andy who is world number 3 and Jamie who is world number 20 in doubles.
