Road to Wimbledon County Finals

In the HSBC Road to Wimbledon Hampshire & IOW County Final Under 10 Girls singles held at Canoe Lakes in Southsea, Portsmouth last weekend, Totally Tennis mini performance player Kirsty Da Silva finished as overall runner-up. She won Group A, unbeaten in all her matches defeating Sienna Boyce 4-1, Abby Ryles 4-0, Poppy Marston 4-1 and a walkover against Sophie Moti. She then faced her old rival Martyna Ciubatiuk in the final who proved too strong and despite a great effort from Da Silva she lost 4-0, finishing in the very respectable runner-up position. Clubmate Melissa Toner competed in Group B where she finished as winner up after beating Ellen Mans 5-4 (9), Savannah Jamieson 4-0, Coco Miller 4-1 but lost to Ciubatiuk 4-1. In the main draw she lost to Sienna Boyce 4-0 to finish in fourth place.

Mum Sue Da Silva said “Kirsty put in a terrific effort across all her matches and showed a new found intensity which made all the difference.” she added “This was her first highly placed finished since moving to green ball, which will hopefully give her some confidence!

This year’s Road to Wimbledon (RTW) Under 14 club event at Totally Tennis was an all girl event run by Head Coach James McIntosh. Isla Hignett, Jasmine Bromilow, Tillie Reid and Nina Williams all competed against each other to decide the overall winner and runner-up to go through to the county stages. Hignett was declared the winner after beating all her opponents. She defeated Bromilow 4-1, 4-2, Reid 4-0, 4-0 and Williams 4-1, 4-0. Bromilow was runner-up beating Reid 4-0, 4-1 and Williams 4-2, 4-1 and Reid then beat Williams 4-2, 4-2.

In the county finals, Hignett played in the main draw beating Mary Grace Clare in the first round 6-2, 6-1 followed by a three set battle against Daisy Fox in the quarter final which she won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (5). She lost in the semi-final against eventual runner-up Magda Kornijczuk 6-3, 6-2. Bromilow won the consolation event after byes in the quarter and semi finals and then beat Emma Paterson 6-1, 6-1.
