Totally Tennis Girls Shine at County Closed

Young performance players Isla Hignett and Jasmin Bromilow competed along side their older brothers in last week’s Hampshire & IOW Junior County Closed event held at the Winchester Racquets And Fitness club (read about that here).

image1-7Both girls competed in the Girls 12 and under and 14 and under singles events. In the 12’s Hignett had a bye in the first round and then beat Mia Gerty in three sets 4-1, 1-4, 10-5 in the quarters. She then lost to top seed and former Totally Tennis clubmate Aisling McGrane 4-0, 4-0 in the semi final, McGrane went on to win the title. Bromilow also had a first round bye but was knocked out at the quarter-final stage by eventual runner-up Charlotte Howard 4-1, 4-1.

In the 14s both girls once again had byes in the first round. Hignett was then beaten by older higher ranked and rated Howard 6-1, 2-6, 10-3 but held her own in the three set match. Bromilow also lost in three sets in the quarters against Alana Unitt 6-1, 1-6, 10-8. The girls both played in the 14 and under consolation event which was a round robin. Hignett beat Bromilow 5-3, 4-1 but lost to Ella Parsons who’s much older 4-2, 5-3 to finish as runner-up. Bromilow also lost against Parsons 4-0, 4-0.

image2-6The girls then teamed up for the 14 and under doubles which was also played as a round robin. They beat Martyna Ciubatiuk and Alice Collins 4-0, 5-3 and Howard and her partner Lacie Squibb 4-1, 4-2 but lost against eventual winners McGrane/Unitt  5-4(3,) 4-1 and Anna Vinnell and Magda Kornijczuk 4-1, 4-2.  Although there was a three way tie with three pairs each winning two matches, the Totally Tennis pair finished 4th out of 5 just missing out on third place by 1% margin.
