Britain’s Jo Konta, who is ranked ninety-seventh defeated ninth seed and Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza in a fantastic match at the US Open. Konta won the epic match 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 in just under three and hours, a record for any women’s match played in New York. The British player has now won fifteen matches in a row, is into the last thirty-two of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and will now play 18th seed Andrea Petkovic form Germany in the third round tomorrow.In the men’s competition British number one Andy Murray made a comeback from two sets down in intense heat against Adrian Mannarino from France to win in five sets 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. Murray’s opponent in the third round will be Thomaz Bellucci from Brazil. In the men’s doubles competition big brother Jamie Murray and partner John Peers, who are eighth seeds beat Bjorn Fratangelo and Dennis Novikov 6-3, 6-2. Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray both won their matches with their respective partners but Aljaz Bedene was knocked out of both the singles and doubles events.
Day five’s line-up sees lots of big names in action including Serena and Venus Williams, men’s top seed Novak Djokovic and two-time US Open champ Rafael Nadal, all looking to progress through to the next week.
