Totally Tennis performance player and Sherfield School Tennis Scholar Liam Hignett has been nominated as Junior Sportsman of the Year in the upcoming Basingstoke Voluntary Sports Council Annual Awards taking place on 4th March at the Apollo Hotel

Hignett had a very successful 2015. He won the Hampshire & IOW County Closed Championship (regional) event at the end of the summer season for the 16 and under age group.  He was Runner Up in the U18’s and also Runner Up in the Mens event even though he was only fifteen at the time, he and his partner were also Runners Up in the U16 doubles event.

Hignett also won another two regional events in the summer, one in Woking and the other in Poole, and along with his partner he also won the U18 doubles in Poole.  This season he has been semi finalist twice in Regional Mens Events, one in Cheltenham and the other in Sutton and he been ranked number one in Hampshire & IOW since July 2015 in the U16 age group, 2nd in the U18’s and 3rd in the Men’s which is a fantastic achievement. He is fifth in the South West region for the U16’s and ranked forty-one Nationally, this is the highest ranking he has achieved in his tennis career so far.

Hignett is the highest rated and ranked player both at school and at Totally Tennis so was once again the number one seed this year in club and school events.  He won every singles match in the Aegon Team Tennis Hants & IOW U16’s, along with every match in the county schools events.  He was a contributing factor the the school winning the Yr 10 boys county title and qualifying for the regional play offs.  He also plays in the Men’s & Mixed  league for Overton in the Basingstoke & Deane District League, in division one.  This year Hignett has also played in the Southampton & Portsmouth Adult Leagues for Warsash and has proved to be a great asset to the team, winning the league recently.

This year Hignett aims to better his rating and raise his regional and national ranking by continuing to work hard alongside studying and taking his GCSE’s this summer. In latest news he has just been selected to play in the 18U County Cup team representing Hampshire & IOW at the end of this month – read more about that here.

Head Coach James McIntosh said “Liam has worked extremely hard in 2015 and achieved by far his best results.  He won 3 regional events, reached the semi-finals of 2 men’s events. He won the county closed for Hants & IOW at the end of the season in the 16’s, finished 2nd in the 18’s and second in the Men’s.”
