Totally Tennis performance players Isla Hignett and Jasmin Bromilow were selected to play in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Girls 12 & under County Cup team last weekend. The girls competed against teams from Kent, Dorset, Surrey and Sussex in the tw0-day event held at The Weald Squash and Tennis Club in Hassocks, East Sussex last weekend.
Hignett and Bromilow were joined by ex-clubmate Eliza Wheeler along with Anna Vinnell and Martyna Ciubatiuk under the guidance of captain Fiona Nicolson. Hampshire number one seed Hannah Smith was unable to take part as she was playing in Italy representing Great Britain.

On Saturday the Hampshire girls played two fixtures against Kent and Dorset. In the singles against Kent the team went 2-1 down with Wheeler beating Caitlin McLoughlin 4-1, 4-0 but Hignett losing to Sofia Johnson 4-0, 4-0 and Vinnell was beaten by Alaia Rubio Perez 4-1, 4-1. Unfortunately this run of luck continued in the Dorset fixture with the exact same scoreline after the singles, Wheeler battled in a three-set match against Kristina Paskauskas 4-0, 2-4, 6-10, Hignett was defeated by Romana Bari 4-0, 4-0 but Vinnell beat Mollie Edge in another three-set match 0-4, 4-2, 10-2. Rain stopped play so both the doubles were carried over to Sunday. As Wheeler was unable to play on Sunday due to a school trip and Vinnell was also absent due to a dance event it was left to Hignett, Bromilow and Ciubatiuk to finish up the competition.
The three remaining girls had a tough contest on the final day of play. In Sunday’s first fixture the girls played against Sussex and again the score was 2-1 after the singles with Hignett beating Sophia Rudko 5-3, 5-4 (4) but Bromilow lost a three set encounter against Stephanie Vieira 1-4, 4-1, 10-7 and Ciubatiuk was beaten by Evelyn Thomas 5-3, 4-0. In the final tie against Surrey all three girls were unlucky and were all defeated, Leah Gonzales Edwards beat Hignett 4-0, 4-1, Oriana Parkins-Godwin beat Bromilow 4-0, 4-1 and Lucy Webber defeated Ciubatiuk 4-1, 4-0. Due to the scoreline and time constraints the doubles was not played.
Isla, Martyna and Jasmin were the last girls standing on Sunday
Hignett and Bromilow paired up to contest the doubles beating Sussex pairing of Vieira and Thomas 5-4(7), 4-0 so with the score levelled to 2-2 it went to a ten point shoot out to decide the overall result which Sussex won 10-7. In the doubles against Dorset, Bromilow and Ciubatiuk were defeated by Bari and her partner Milly Davis 4-2, 5-3.
Hignett’s mum Donella said “On the first day the weather disrupted play several times and both Eliza and Isla had to come off and on again, particularly tough for Eliza who had to come of a couple of times against Kristina including during a ten point match tie break.”
She added, “So the team finished last but they all tried hard, played lots of matches and supported each other well. Fiona was a great team captain.”
Thank you to Donella Hignett for the information and for all the great photos 🙂
