Totally Tennis performance player Liam Hignett won the Open Men’s Singles title at the Eastleigh Open 2016 held at the Virgin Active Hampshire Health and Racquets Club in Southampton this weekend.
After a bye in the first round third seed Hignett beat doubles partner Ryan Hutchinson 6-4, 6-2 in round two, eighth seed Ben Patten 6-4, 6-2 in the quarter-finals and seventh seed Corey Nicholls in the semis 6-3, 6-3. In the final he faced second seed Freddie Powell whom he beat 7-5, 6-1 to win the title. Totally Tennis teammate and fellow Sherfield School tennis scholar Miles Bromilow also competed in the event beating Oliver Deacock in the first round 6-2, 6-1 but was sadly defeated in round two by Powell 6-3, 6-4.
In the Open Men’s Doubles, Hignett and Hutchinson lost in the semi-finals to second seeds Oliver Ikonkwo and Callum Rendle 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 10-4. Top seeds Powell and Patten won the event and Hignett/Hutchinson finished in third place overall after winning the third/fourth place playoff against Deaconk/Guy Taylor 6-2, 6-0.
Bromilow also competed in the 18U Boys singles beating Mats Colling in round one 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 followed by fourth seed Darius Perkins in the quarters 7-5, 6-2 but lost in three sets in the semis against Hutchinson 6-3, 0-6, 10-6. He finished in third place overall after he defeated James Blair in the third/fourth place playoffs 6-3, 3-6, 12-10.
