Bates Wins Most Improved Player at Annual Family Tournament

Penny Bates is a regular at Totally Tennis playing up to three times a week in the adult programme run at the indoor centre, attending weekly ladies mornings and drills sessions.

Tennis is a sport enjoyed by her whole family and back in 1999 Bates’ mother, Margaret suggested that the family kept in touch by holding an annual family tennis tournament. Margaret had played at Wimbledon before the Second World War and her entire family were enthusiastic and very talented tennis players. The tournament has taken place every year since then except one at various locations throughout England hosted by one of the family. This year it took place at St George’s Lawn Tennis Club in Weybridge with thirty-one competitors ranging in age from late teens to mid 70’s.

The tournament took place on very well kept grass courts and lasted from mid morning to late afternoon in a round robin format. Although Bates did not win overall, she was given the cup for the most improved player thanks to the coaching she receives at Totally Tennis.

Bates said, “I play at Totally Tennis up to three times a week taking part in the Monday and Friday morning drills run by Head Coach James and on Wednesday at the drills session run by James, Jordan and occasionally George.” she added, “I cannot praise the coaching staff enough for their dedication and enthusiasm.”

Bates’ cousin Jenny Cornfield who won the women’s section also has a connection with Totally Tennis as she attended a weekend course run by Shyam Vitlani at Hampshire Court Hotel last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, finding it very helpful.

Congratulations Penny and Jenny 😉
