Fourteen teams competed in the Year 3 and 4 primary schools tournament hosted by Totally Tennis at the Indoor Centre in the War Memorial Park earlier this month. The teams competing came from six different schools including Great Binfields Primary (3 teams), St Mary’s Juniors (3 teams), North Waltham Primary (3 teams), Sherborne St John (2 teams), Castle Hill (2 teams) and St Johns.
Each team had four players who were ranked in order of 1 to 4, they played their opposing number from opposing schools. The format of the matches were tie-breaks to 10, each players individual score would count towards the teams overall score. The teams were divided into three groups with the top two teams from each group going through to the Quarter Finals along with the best 2nd and 3rd placed teams.
In the Quarter Final matches North Waltham (1) beat North Waltham Team (3) 3 – 1, St Johns Primary beat Castle Hill (1) 3 – 1, Sherborne St John (1) beat St Mary’s (2) 2 – 2 (Sherborne won on points) and St Mary’s (1) defeated St Mary’s Team (3) 4 – 0.
In the semi-finals St Mary’s (1) beat St Johns 3 – 1 and Sherborne St John beat North Waltham (1) 3 – 1. The overall winners were St Mary’s (1) who defeated Sherborne St John 3 – 1 in the final. In the third/fourth play off match St John’s beat North Waltham (1) 2 – 2 (St John’s won on points won 30 – 29) to finish in third place overall. The St Mary’s (1) team will now go onto compete in the Hampshire Games held next month.
Head Coach James Macintosh who ran the event said “It was great to have fourteen teams compete in this year’s competition and some new teams who have not entered within the last couple of years.”
He added, “The overall standard of this year’s competition was very good and higher than in previous years. It was also nice to see how much some of the less experienced players improved and gained confidence as the day went on.”
