Totally Tennis hosted the annual Primary Schools Tennis Tournament at the indoor centre this week with a total of fifteen teams competing from five local schools; St Mary’s Junior School, St John’s C of E Primary School, Sherborne St John Primary School, Castle Hill Primary School and Winklebury Junior School.
The teams played in three boxes of five teams with the top two teams and two of the best third placed teams progressing through to the quarter final stages. There were four players in each team and each player played one singles match with the format of tie breaks to 10 points.
In the first semi-finals, it was a very close match with the St Mary’s A team drawing against the St Johns A team 2 – 2 but St Mary’s just edged the victory with one extra point overall to win 32 – 31. In the second semi-final match Sherborne A beat St. Mary’s B 3 – 1. In the final St Mary’s A beat Sherborne 4 – 0 to be crowned the champions and St John’s won the third/fourth place play off beating St Mary’s B 3 – 1.
Both the winners and runners-up teams, St Mary’s A and Sherborne, will now go on to represent Basingstoke in the Hampshire Games which takes place at Aldershot in June.
