Performance player and former Sherfield School tennis scholar Liam Hignett was part of the Hampshire & IOW men’s team who competed in the LTA Summer County Cup 2018 at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in Manchester from 23rd to 27 July.
Hignett joined fellow county players Sam Bird, Joshua Girling, Ryan Golesworthy, Austin Gwilliam, George Houghton, Michael Johnson, Miles McDowall and Paul Scullard to compete in Group 3 of the week long doubles competition against five other teams from East of Scotland, Cheshire, North of Scotland, Buckinghamshire and North Wales.
In their first fixture on day one, Hampshire were pitted against Buckinghamshire where they lost 7 – 2 with only the pairings of Houghton/McDowall and Girling/Johnson winning their matches. Things did not get much better on day two with another 7 – 2 loss against the team from East of Scotland with Houghton/McDowall the only pair to win both their matches. Things did improve on the third day of competition with a win for the Hampshire team against North Wales 5 – 4, Hignett/Golesworthy won their two matches, Houghton/McDowall added another two victories to their overall score and Johnson/Scullard also picked up a win.
On day four things reverted back to earlier in the week with the Hampshire team losing against North of Scotland 6 – 3 with only Houghton/McDowall winning three matches. The final day saw another 6 – 3 defeat against Cheshire that once against saw Houghton/McDowall as the only winning pair securing yet three more matches. The team from East of Scotland were declared the overall winners of the group with ten points and the Hampshire team finished in last place with just two points.
County Cup events give players the opportunity to represent their county in team competition in national/regional stages in various age groups from 9 and under to adult open events. Players are selected to play by their respective county and there are two separate County Cup competitions, one taking place in summer and one in winter.
The 50+ players, who play together every Wednesday morning at Totally Tennis, enjoyed their annual Christmas Party with festive food after their session.
The coaches joined with the players to enjoy the party and celebrate another great year of tennis as well as the forthcoming Christmas season. Cheers to all the players and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2018.
The over 50’s mixed session runs every Wednesday from 10am – 11.30am at a cost of £6.50 per session. For more information about this session and the Adult Programme visit our website here or telephone the office on 01256 358816.
