Totally Tennis performance players Isla Hignett and Tillie Reid attended the second part of the annual Basingstoke Sports Awards this week, the Mayors reception at the Civic Offices. Both girls received cheques for grant aid donation and certificates presented by Mayor Paul Frankum. They then joined fellow local sportsmen and women to celebrate their sporting achievements and enjoyed a buffet.
The annual Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards event is a highlight of the local sporting calendar organised and hosted by sports council chairman Kevin Laing. The awards, which have been going for over twenty-five years celebrate the success of clubs, teams, coaches, officials, volunteers and individuals involved in sport in the Basingstoke and Deane area. Alongside the awards and scholarships, sportsmen and women can receive funding, like the girls, via the Sports Grant Aid scheme, which is funded by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. The funds can be used to help with everything from travelling and coaching expenses to competition entry fees, equipment and clothing requirements.
Head coach James McIntosh and performance player Liam Hignett both attended last week’s Basingstoke Sports Council annual awards, hosted by Kevin Laing, at the Apollo Hotel.
Even though neither the Club (Club of the Year went to Wessex Wyvern Modern Pentathlon Club) or Hignett picked up awards on the night they both received certificates. Hignett also one of the nineteen sport scholarships announced on the evening by Basingstoke Sports Centre (Sports Trust).
McIntosh said “It was great to be amongst so many talented Basingstoke sportsmen and women at the sports awards .” he added, “It’s a good achievement for both the club and Liam to be finalists in their respective categories again this year.”
