Maria Miller MP Visits Totally Tennis

Totally Tennis hosted a special visitor last week when Maria Miller MP came to the indoor centre to see the Satellite coaching centre in action. Pupils from Costello Technology College and Sherfield School, including some of the clubs mini performance players and the school’s tennis scholars were involved in an on court coaching session with Tennis Director Nigel Long and the coaching team.

The Satellite initiative is part of the London 2012 Olympic Legacy to get more young people to regularly participate in sport through the expert coaching available in local sports clubs such as Totally Tennis who have a successful Community Schools Tennis Programme. The aim of the programme is to ensure that every secondary school and sixth form college in Hampshire is offered the opportunity to host a satellite club by 2016, open to all young people across the local community including neighbouring schools, not just the school’s own pupils. The satellite club scheme also works alongside the “This Girl Can” campaign to encourage more women to get involved and play sport.

Miller commented “Satellite clubs offer more young people the opportunity to get involved in sports with expert coaching from local clubs. Too many young women drop out of sport in their teenage years because they don’t find a sport for them or the facilities don’t cater for their individual needs. This programme is part of a broader scheme to try to reverse that trend and get us all more active.”

The Satellite clubs are run by dedicated professionals who are committed to young people being given the chance to try a wide variety of sports that might otherwise be unavailable to them.” she added “More funding is available for more clubs and schools to set up satellite clubs in the town. We need more to get involved and reach out to children who currently may not take part in sport outside of school on a regular basis. “

Priya Samuel, Satellite Clubs Development Manager from the Partnership also attended the event and said “Satellite Clubs are about increasing and retaining the number of 11 – 25 year olds in sport. We achieve this through partnerships like this one with Totally Tennis and Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, who work together to delver quality sport in a safe and fun environment.” she added “To have the Totally Tennis Satellite Club visited today by Maria Miller MP is fantastic for us as one can see the great work delivered by the coaches and the whole Totally Tennis team
