In the semis they beat Harry Wilmott-Stanton and his partner Arianna Kennedy 6-1 to secure their place in the finals where they faced former Totally Tennis players Esther Adeshina and Ryan Golesworthy. They won the match 6-3 to win the event overall, collect the huge trophy and some prize money.
Totally Tennis performance player Liam Hignett represented Hampshire as part of the Men’s Winter County Cup team in the fixture played at David Lloyd Southampton last weekend. Second seed Hignett (wearing orange shorts below) joined team members Jake Norris, George Houghton, Ryan Golesworthy, Joshua Gook, Edward Percival, Paul Scullard, Harry Wilmott-Stanton and Michael Johnson to compete in Group 3b. The team, captained by Julian Godfrey (pictured below with the team), played against teams from Dorset (Friday), South Wales (Saturday) and Derbyshire on Sunday.
On Friday Dorset beat Hampshire 5-4 overall. Hignett won his singles match beating Benjamin Battey 6-2, 6-0 along with Norris, Scullard and Johnson who all also won to give the team a 4-2 lead going into the doubles. Unfortunately Hignett and Norris lost in their doubles against Battey and Adam Glynn in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 0-1(9) as did pairing Houghton/Scullard and Gook/Johnson so Dorset won the first tie.
Things did not quite go to plan again on Saturday with the strong South Wales team winning 7-2 overall and all six Hampshire players recording a loss in their singles matches. Golesworthy/Houghton and Johnson/Percival both won their doubles to claw back 2 points but Hignett/Gook lost 6-1, 6-0 against Craig Evans/Christopher Lewis.
There was everything to play for on the final day in the fixture against Derbyshire but things didn’t go in the Hampshire teams favour with another narrow 5-4 loss. Hignett won his singles against Bradley Buckland 6-0, 6-2, Houghton and Johnson also secured singles victories so it was level pegging. Hignett/Norris were the only pair to secure a doubles result against Buckland/Dennis Archer 6-3, 6-1. Golesworthy/Houghton and Johnson/Scullard both lost their matches.
After an unsuccessful weekend on the scoresheet despite some really good matches the Hampshire team will now be relegated to Group 4a. South Wales won the fixture and will be promoted to Group 3a.

The event which was held at the David Lloyd Club in Southampton from 26th to 28th February saw the Hampshire team compete against teams from Berkshire, Northampshire and Oxfordshire. Second seed Hignett was joined by fellow county players George Barfoot, George Houghton, Jake Norris, Zizheng Jin, Austin Gwilliam, Ryan Hutchinson and William Coward.
On the first day Hampshire beat Berkshire with a resounding 8-1 scoreline. Hignett defeated higher rated player Lewis Brown 6-4, 6-1 in the singles but lost in the doubles with partner Hutchinson 6-3, 6-4 against Oliver Okonkwo and Sebastian Tong. Overall the team won six singles and two doubles.
On Day 2 the success continued with another 8-1 win for the team against Northamptonshire. Hignett beat Alexander Ballinger 6-2, 6-0 in his singles match and then teamed up with top seed Barfoot (pictured below) to win their doubles match against Henry Masters and Joe Tyler 6-3, 7-5. This time the team won all the doubles matches and five of the six singles with only Barfoot losing his singles match.
The final day was another success story with the Hampshire boys winning all their matches against Oxfordshire 8-0. Up against another higher rated player, Hignett won his third singles tie of the weekend against Cameron Price 6-4, 6-0 but didn’t play his doubles with Barfoot as the opposition conceded the match. Overall the boys won all their matches played. A very successful weekend of tennis for the Hampshire Boys and a well served promotion. Congratulations to Liam and his teammates for a job well done.
Thanks to Donella Hignett for all the great photos.
