September Squad Term

With the summer holidays now over it’s back to school and the return of the Totally Tennis Junior Squads which form part of the club’s junior programme coached by our team of LTA licensed coaches. Totally Tennis juniors squads are run throughout the year designed for children aged from four years upwards that start with mini tennis nets and sponge balls and work up to full sized courts and yellow balls. Every child is given an appropriate squad to join, usually guided by age.

Mini Development Squads (Under 10’s) include Pirates (4-6 years), Indians (6-8 years), Dodgers (8-9 years) and Giants (9-10 years). Development Squads (Over 10’s) include A, B and C squads are for older players aged eleven and over. Performance Squads include the invitational mini performance squads of Red, Orange and Green for talented players and Yellow squads are for older players in the U12 to U18 categories.

The 2018 autumn term started on 4th September and will run for sixteen weeks until Friday 20th December 2019 (sessions run throughout half term). There are Open Weeks held during the last week of term in March, July & December where parents are invited to watch their children’s progress during an on court session. Sessions take place at the indoor centre in the War Memorial Park as well as some sessions at Hampshire Court.

TT Tour – US Open

The TT Tour US Open tournament took place at the indoor centre last weekend with events for the red and orange players run by coaching assistant Andrew Dingwall.

In the red event there were lots of really close matches and players were learning much about competing in matches. Kevin Karjalainen was the winner beating William Durman in the final 10-3. Neel Chandrasekar and Ayush Thondapu were joint third and fourth overall, other players who competed were Julia Mikztal, Roksanna Jelonek, Andrew Smith, Owen Hammond, Diya Shanmugaras and Luke Porter.

Dingwall said, “For many players this was their first ever competition and everyone did very well by helping each other keeping score.” he added “William did incredibly well to fight through and beat Ayush 14-12 in one of the semi finals to progress to the final but was then beaten by Kevin who became TT Tour champion!

In the Orange competition there was some great tennis played with some fantastic rallies and well deserved winners. Hayden Cummings was the overall winner once again beating Guhan Chendhilkumar in the final 10-4. James Blackwell and Megan Fisher were third and fourth, Harry Dolman was fifth, sixth place went to Rory Thompson followed by Caitlin Manley and Lottie Blackwell. Special mention to Harry who battled through and beat Rory 16-14 in their very close fought match.

Dingwall commented “A special well done to Caitlin, Harry, James and Lottie for competing in their first ever TT Tour!” he continued, “Congratulations to Hayden on coming out the victor against Guhan to become the champion of the day.”

The Totally Tennis Tour is for Development Squads and Mini Performance Squads players who get the opportunity to compete in seven tournaments throughout the year. The top eight players from each squad will be invited back to play in the Grand Final’s in November for the chance to finish as the club champions. Leaderboard’s will show players rankings in each squad and points will be awarded to the winner, runner-up and third/fourth place players for each event as well as points for entering.

The Grand Slam events of the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open offer higher points of 1,000 and or the winners 500 for the runners-up. All other events give the winners 250 points, 125 for second place and 75 for third/fourth places, every player gets 100 points for all events they enter, each age group leaderboard will be updated after each tournament.

TT Tour 2017 – Australian Open

The first event of the 2017 TT Tour , the Australian Open was held at Totally Tennis’ indoor centre last Sunday. The red event was won by William Durman and the Orange event was won by Hayden Cummings.

In the Red event the 1,000 Grand Slam points was bagged by Durman, Julia Miksztal was runner-up and Abhay Paruchuri finished in third place

In the Orange event, Cummings started his 2017 campaign with gusto after finished as 2016 champion in his age group. He beat first time TT competitor Charlie McKenzie in the final 10-3, McKenzie was placed an impressive second. Ansh Annareddy was in third place and fourth position went to Faith Tompkins. Kevin and Guhan Chendhilkumar were fifth and sixth respectively and Luke Shattock was seventh overall.

TT Tour – Wimbledon

As the world’s top tennis players prepared for this year’s Wimbledon fortnight playing on the famous grass courts at SW19, the young players at Totally Tennis competed in their own Grand Slam event, the TT Tour Wimbledon last Sunday on the eve of this year’s much anticipated Championships.

20160626_115045With a 1,000 Grand Slam event points up for grabs there was always lots to play for besides being declared the winner. In the Orange event, Hayden Cummings played really well to win all his matches making it three consecutive TT Tour wins in a row, Daniel Ward was in second place again this month and Carmen Visuals finished in third position. Megan Fisher, Henry Terry, Dinobi Okafor, Thorsten Richter and Rutendo Mufiri ranked from fourth to eighth respectively.

20160626_115102Daniel Shattock was the Green event winner with Fechi Okafor finishing as runner-up and third place going to Tinuke Adelakun. Last month’s winner Chi Chi Okafor was fourth, Dylan Jones fifth, sixth place went to Jack Morita, Diego Visuals and Mikun Adeniran were seventh and eighth overall.

Andrew Dingwall who ran the event said, “A special well done to Megan Fisher and Henry Terry for playing in their first ever orange event, they played some very good tennis that helped Megan reach the semi-final. Congrats to Hayden Cummings for winning the orange event.” he added “A very competitive green event contained a host of marathon matches with some of them going to a deciding tiebreak. Congratulations to Daniel Shattock for winning this event. Overall a very successful day of tennis!
