Great British Tennis Weekend at Stratton Park

Families were invited to play tennis for FREE at Totally Tennis on  Sunday 17th July at Stratton Park as part of this year’s Lawn Tennis Associations (LTA) Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW). Along with other tennis centres across the country, the club offered free tennis and coaching for people of all ages and abilities, the perfect day out for family and friends. The sessions at Stratton Park followed on from the first event held at the War Memorial Park back in May.

There were three seasons run by Head Coach James Macintosh, Munchkins  and Adults, Juniors and players with disabilities and Family time which was attended by forty people overall.

The GBTW scheme is designed to get people outdoors and trying tennis for free this summer at various locations countrywide on three summer weekends. Thousands of free events took place across the country for the whole family offering players the chance to experience Highland Spring Mini Tennis, Cardio Tennis, coaching and relaxed free play.

The Quorn Family Tennis Cup

Totally Tennis hosted The Quorn Family Tennis Cup on Saturday 7th May at the indoor centre in the War Memorial Park. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) event, run by coach Nick Dingwall, was a parent and child tournament that give families the opportunity to compete in an informal and fun competition. The event was also an opportunity to promote playing tennis more frequently and eat healthy food as part of an active lifestyle.

This particular event was a Red Ball (Juniors 10 and under playing with family member aged 18 or over) competition with the winners of each event throughout the country earning the opportunity of a day out at a Quorn Family Tennis Cup event held on the qualifying weekend of a LTA grass court major event in May or June. Each pair will have the chance to play against other winners on the day as well as watch the professional players in action.

Eight pairs entered the tournament which was run as a round robin event, with the top two winners from each box going through to the main draw semi-finals and the bottom two pairs going through to a consolation semi-finals. The winners were Hayden Cummings and his dad Ben with Luke McDermott and his father finishing as runners up. The Cummings, who were joined in the event by younger and older sons duo Ellis and Jordan, received prizes and will now compete in the regional event. All participants received a certificate for entering and some goodies of their own, a fun day was had by everyone.image2

Dingwall said” Well done to Luke and Hayden for reaching the finals with their dads. I’m looking forward to seeing all the children and their parents playing more tennis in the future, promoting the active and healthy lifestyle which is what the event was all about.

 

Great British Tennis Weekend 2015 in Pictures

A sunny afternoon was the perfect setting for this years Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW) event at Totally Tennis’ last Saturday, where approximately fifty people of all ages and abilities were welcomed to pick up a racket and play tennis for free on both the indoor and outdoor courts in the War Memorial Park.

Lots of families were on court enjoying the fun and games aided by the team of coaches. Young players enjoyed the free balloons, wristbands and face painting. Cakes, teas and ice creams were also sold at the community event.

Tennis Director Nigel Long said ”It was great to see so many new players as well as some of our regulars. We hope they enjoyed themselves and will return to join some sessions in our programme here at the indoor centre.”

Tennis Fun This Weekend

Want to have fun playing tennis this weekend? Missed out on Totally Tennis’ last Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW) event in May? Fear not because this weekend the fun will be repeated at Stratton Park in Kempshott which is the venue for the second GBTW event ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday.

Adult Drills 1.30pm – 2.15pm and 3.00pm – 3.45pm

The adult drills taster session is ideal for everyone new to the sport or those who haven’t picked up a racket in a long time. Rackets can be borrowed if you don’t have your own, just come prepared to hit a few balls and have some fun.

Mini & Junior Tennis 2.15pm – 3.00pm

No matter what your ability you will have fun on court with other junior players of your age. Totally Tennis Coaches will be on hand to offer tips to help your game and advice on how you can continue to play to improve and for further enjoyment.

Family Time 1.30 – 4.00pm 

So grab your racket (rackets provided for those who don’t have their own) and get on court with your family and have some fun. Modified balls and rackets will be provided for the younger ones and coaches will be on hand to give the whole family some pointers if you want them. There will also be face painting, bouncy castle, cakes, tea, coffee and the coach rally challenge.
