Gold for Gevin in Worthing

The Chendhilkumar twins were back in action in the 9 and under Mixed singles at the David Lloyd US Open tournament held at the end of last month at the David Lloyd Club Worthing, West Sussex.

20170924_120638.jpgBrothers Gevin and Guhan both played really well and made it through to the final with Gevin beating his brother to take the gold medal. Both boys had a bye in the first round followed by wins in the quarters, Gevin defeating Benjamin Casse 7-5, 7-4 and Guhan beating Ethan Clark 7-5, 7-5.

20170924_120548In the semis Gevin beat Paul Staton 7-5, 7-3 and Guhan won in three sets against Oscar Douse 5-7, 7-3, 7-6. In the final Gevin beat Guhan 7-3, 7-3 to win the event and lift the trophy.

Silver Medal for Gevin in Buckinghamshire

Totally Tennis mini tennis player Gevin Chendhilkumar was runner-up in the Tennace at Gxltc Red Orange Starter Red 9 & under mixed singles tournament held at the Gerrard’s Cross Lawn Tennis Club in Buckinghamshire.

20170917_151235In the first round Gevin defeated Sofia Escobar Daantje 10-2 followed by fergus Baxter 10-8 in the quarters and then beat Ansh Annareddy in the semi-finals 10-5. Sadly he lost in the final against Max Durkin 10-7 to finish in the runner-up position and collect the silver medal.

Twin brother Guhan also competed in the event winning his first match against Neve Bushell 10-3 before losing in the quarter final against Joshua Fienberg 10-6. He then defeated James Matthew Stokes 10-1 in his first play-off match and finished 6th overall after losing to Fergus Baxter 10-7 in his second match.

TT Tour: Wimbledon Winners 2017

As the world’s top tennis players enjoyed a day off from play in SW19 yesterday the juniors at Totally Tennis participated in their own Wimbledon event as part of the TT Tour series.

The Grand Slam event had a 1,000 points up for grabs so there was lots to play for as as well as the becoming the winner. In the red event, six players were competing in the round robin event; Daisy, Yuvraj and Roksanna were drawn in Box 2 and William, Ayush and Julia were playing in Box 2.

Box 1 was won by Roksanna after winning her matches against Daisy 10-6 and Yuvraj 10-4, the runner-up spot went to Yuvraj. Ayush won Box 2 beating William 10-6 and Julia 10-3, William was runner-up defeating Julia 10-3.

In the semis William beat Roksanna 10-3 and Ayush defeated Yuvraj 10-6. In the final William beat Ayush to win the event and earn the maximum 1,000 points.

In the orange event Ansh won Box 1 beating Guhan 10-7 and Charlie 10-7, second place went to Charlie who beat Guhan 10-6. Box 2 was won by Gevin who defeated Vihan 10-1 and Rory 10-6, the runner-up spot went to Rory who beat Vihan 10-6.

In the semis Ansh beat Rory 10-4 and Charlie defeated Gevin. Charlie was declared the winner after beating Ansh in the final 10-8 adding the 1,000 points to his leaderboard total.

The Totally Tennis Tour is for Development Squads and Mini Performance Squads players who get the opportunity to compete in seven tournaments throughout the year. The top eight players from each squad will be invited back to play in the Grand Final’s in November for the chance to finish as the club champions. Leaderboard’s will show players rankings in each squad and points will be awarded to the winner, runner-up and third/fourth place players for each event as well as points for entering.

The Grand Slam events of the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open offer higher points of 1,000 and or the winners 500 for the runners-up. All other events give the winners 250 points, 125 for second place and 75 for third/fourth places, every player gets 100 points for all events they enter, each age group leaderboard will be updated after each tournament.

Sunday 15th November – Grand Finals (by invitation only)

Open Days Proved a Great Success

Hundreds of children visited the indoor centre last weekend to play in the club’s tennis Open Days. After the success of last week’s Schools Tennis Roadshow that visited local schools across Basingstoke, Totally Tennis opened its doors on Saturday and Sunday to offer primary school age children the opportunity to play on the full size tennis courts in free fun sessions.

Phil Leighton, from the Tennis Foundation, who ran the roadshow visited ten schools and saw over 1400 children throughout last week and with another ten schools distributed the flyers to their pupils about the free open days, the anticipation was high for fun weekend packed full of tennis. The roadshow introduced tennis to a large audience throughout the week highlighting that it’s not only a great way for kids to get fit and healthy but also develop important motor skills and learn sportsmanship all whilst having lots of fun.

Tennis Director Nigel Long said, “I’d like to thank Phil, the Tennis Foundation, the whole Totally Tennis team and our squad players for helping us to provide so many children with the opportunity to play in our Open Days last weekend.” he added, “There were a great success with so many of the children deciding to take up tennis in our junior squad sessions.”

Over 300 children visited Totally Tennis over the course of the sunny weekend to participate in the mixed sessions with Leighton and club coaches James McIntosh, Jordan Frederick, Shyam Vithani, Andrew Dingwall, Simon James and Steph Catlin. The mini tennis sessions offered the groups of players ten different activities from hand-eye coordination to basic tennis skills. They rotated around the stations to try the different skills including throwing and catching, racket skills, target throws, speed of serve and more fun activities. In addition to the free sessions a special roadshow offer encouraged many of the young players to sign up to play in the Pirates and Indians squads which are part of the club’s Junior Development Programme.
Head Coach James McIntosh said, “All of the coaches and helpers over the weekend did a fantastic job in making the open days such a success. I would like to say a big thank you to all the squad players who generously gave up time over their weekend to be involved.” he added “Also a big thank you to Jill, Emily, Karen, Anne, Claire, Kerri, Penny and Sandy for all of the organisation and selling of refreshments over the two days.”

A large team of squad players gave up their time to be involved in the event encouraging younger children to enjoy playing tennis. A big thanks to Daniel Prickett, Aaron Dawson, Oliver Alemeny, Eddie Lakatos, Dylan Hall-Jones, Isla Hignett, Jas Bromilow, Dessi Bratinova, Liam Hignett, Miles Bromilow, Harry Feast, Louise Mallozi, Lucy Groves, Elinor Banks and Danielle Beckett.

Steph Catlin (pictured above coaching) added “The roadshow this weekend was a huge success. Speaking on behalf of all the coaches, we had a lot of fun exposing the best sport in the world to hundreds of little ones this weekend.

“We can’t promise that the weather will be as beautiful, but we hope to see them all in our squads to continue the learning and fun! A big shout out to all the current TT players who helped out, they played a huge part in the running and success of the weekend!

TT Tour – Sony Open 2017

The latest TT Tour competition, The Sony Open, took place at the indoor centre last Sunday (30th April) with seven junior players competing in the Orange event.

Hayden Cummings won all his matches to take the top spot, Gevin Chendhilkumar was runner-up after playing in his first TT Tour final and third place went to Charlie McKenzie. Ash Annareddy finished in fourth place, Guhan Chendhilkumar was fifth and first time TT Tour competitors Conor Stevens and Rory Thompson finished in sixth and seventh place respectively.

Coach Andrew Dingwall who ran the tournament said, “Congratulations to all players that competed in the Sony TT Tour, each player produced some great tennis. A special well done to Conor and Rory in playing in their first ever event, both holding their own against the other players.” he added “Congratulations to Gevin for making it to his first final and producing some great tennis in a hotly contested final of which Hayden came out the victor.”
