Hignett Competes in Corby

Totally Tennis coach and performance player Liam Hignett competed in the Mens singles at the British Tour Corby held at Corby Tennis Centre in Northamptonshire.

Hignett competed in the main draw and was up against sixth seed Lamar Bartley in his first match which he lost 7-6(4), 6-4. His next event is the British Tour Loughborough at the beginning of March.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) British Tour 2019* provides a circuit of tournaments designed to give up and coming players the opportunity to gain experience in their quest to become professional tennis players, to provide competition for professional players in between competing in professional events at home and abroad, as well as providing a national level open competition circuit.

Harry Dolman Wins Gold

It was the turn of the younger players to compete last weekend in the latest South West Winter County Tour held at the indoor centre by coach Liam Hignett.

img_3431Two Totally Tennis players, Harry Dolman and Kevin Karjalainen competed in the 9 and under Mixed Singles along with six other players. Dolman (pictured above with former TT coach Jordan Frederick who returned for the event) was declared the winner after beating Ralph Du Boulay in the quarters 10-5, Karjalainen in the semis 10-7 and Haohan Lu in the final 11-9.

Hignett Competes in Bath

Performance player and coach Liam Hignett competed in the main draw of the Men’s Singles at the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) British Tour held at the University of Bath last week. Hignett won his first match against qualifier Archie Graham 6-3, 6-1 but lost in the second round against sixth seed Sean Hodkin 6-1, 7-5. The event was won by Luke Johnson from Yorkshire.

Doubles Win On Home Soil For Isla and Tillie

The latest South West Winter County Tour event, run by coach Liam Hignett, took place last weekend at Totally Tennis’ indoor centre in Basingstoke. There were two events, the 16 and under Boys and Girls Doubles.

In the girls event Totally Tennis was represented by performance players Isla Hignett and Tillie Reid who were crowned winners of the event after beating Ivana Maynard and Gabriella Rawles 4-1, 4-0 and a walkover against Giulia Caturano and partner Jogaile Juknaite.

In the boys event second seeds Martino Colabella and Adrian Leung from Kent were declared the winners. In the quarters they defeated Dennis and Philip Dimov 4-0, 3-4(3), 10-8 followed by Ben Deller and Rory Hodge in the semis  4-2, 4-3(2) and Oliver Brooker and James Stanley (who had defeated the top seeds Elliott Lowe and Freddie Simpson in the semis) 4-2, 2-2, 10-2.

Hampshire County Cup Call Up For Hignett

Performance player and assistant coach Liam Hignett was part of the Hampshire & IOW Mens team that competed in the LTA Winter County Cup 2018 held at Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre in Cambridge at the end of last month.

Hignett (pictured front left) was joined in the Hampshire team by Julian Godfrey, Robert Mitchell, Ryan Golesworthy, George Houghton, Michael Johnson, Paul Scullard, Jake Norris and Austin Gwilliam who completed in the Mens Group 4b competition against teams from Durham & Cleveland, Leicestershire and the Channel Islands.

On the first day the Hampshire team were up against the Durham & Cleveland team and lost 6-3. Hignett won his singles match 6-2, 6-2 but lost his doubles match with partner Jake Norris 6-3, 6-4. Day two was much better result with Hampshire beating Leicestershire 6-3. Hignett won his singles and his doubles match with Norris with both matches having the same 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

On the final day Hampshire notched up another win against the Channel Islands 5-1. Hignett maintained his singles clean sheet winning his final match 6-4, 6-0 and was not required to play his doubles match with Norris as the tie was already decided. Overall the team finished in second place with four points and retained their position in the league while winners Durham & Cleveland, with six points, gained promotion.

Hignett also competed in the Open Mens Singles at the LTA British Tour Edgbaston 2 held at The Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham. Sixth seed Hignett beat Benjamin Stanford in the first round 6-2, 6-1 and then Alex Griffiths in the second round  7-6(4), 6-3 but then lost in the quarters to fifth seed Matthew Hollingworth.

 

 

 

 

Runner-up Medal For Nikesh Bomma on Home Soil

The latest South West Winter County Tour event run by performance player and coach Liam Hignett took place at Totally Tennis’ indoor centre last weekend.

Two of the clubs mini performance players Hayden Cummings and Nikesh Bomma competed in the 10 and under Boys competition along with nine other players. Top seed Cummings beat Cameron Bagha in the quarters 4-0, 4-0 but was then knocked out of the competition by eventual winner Michael Cooke in the semis 4-1, 4-3(3). Bomma defeated Alexander Bruce 4-2, 4-3(2) in his quarter final match followed by Marcin Kornijczuk in the semis 4-0, 4-2 before losing to Cooke in the three set final 4-3(1), 3-4(4), 10-3 to finish in second place overall. Cummings finished in fourth place.

Bomma’s coach Jamie Jordan said. “Nikesh played unbelievably well in his second ever tournament and second time he got to the final.” He added, “He’s really enjoying competing and working on getting his rating higher. Great effort Nikesh, keep up the good work.”

In last month’s South West Winter County Tour Men’s event held last month, also run by Hignett, Totally Tennis’ Loic Armstrong was in action. Armstrong beat Paul Stavely 4-0, 4-1 in the first round but lost against third seed Sam Li 4-1, 3-4(1), 10-6 in the quarters. Top seed George Russell won the event.
