Hignett Competes in LTA British Tour Events

Since the beginning of the year Performance player and coach Liam Hignett has been competing in LTA British Tour tournaments held across the country. Over the last month he has played in the Open Mens Singles events in Bournemouth, Woking, Connaught and North Oxford.

4bf331f2-2896-4ac5-9aaa-e000c1d07196.jpgIn the Bournemouth event he won his first two matches beating George Russell in the first round 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-3 followed by Finely Cook in round two 6-4, 6-1. He then lost in the quarters against eventual winner Toby Samuel 6-3, 6-4. It was a similar story at the Woking event with Hignett getting knocked out at the quarter-final stage, after winning his first two matches, by James Mackinlay in a three set battle  7-6(5), 6-7(6), [1-0](9).

After a bye in the first round of the Connaught event, Hignett lost in the second round to Alexander Jochim 7-5, 3-6, [11-9].  In the North Oxford tournament he made an early exit in the first round after losing to Yujiro Onuma 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) British Tour 2019* provides a circuit of tournaments designed to give up and coming players the opportunity to gain experience in their quest to become professional tennis players, to provide competition for professional players in between competing in professional events at home and abroad, as well as providing a national level open competition circuit.

Cummings Win The Quorn™ Family Cup 2019

Father and son duo Hayden and Ben Cummings won the Quorn™ Family Cup 2019 event held at the indoor centre yesterday. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) event, run by coach Miles Bromilow, is a family tournament that give players the opportunity to compete in an informal and fun competition with an adult family member. The event also promotes playing tennis more frequently and eat healthy food as part of an active lifestyle.

Sixteen players entered the competition playing in two boxes of four pairings. The top two teams in each box progressed to the semis and the bottom two played consolation matches against each other. The Cummings, who also won the event back in 2016, defeated Roksana and Chris Jelonek in the final 10-5.

Bromilow who said, “We had a great turnout and lots of prizes were given out. Congratulations to our winning pair Hayden and Ben.”

As club winner’s Hayden and Ben will be invited to a Red Ball Festival Day hosted at an LTA Summer Grass Court event in June. The Festival Days include some more, fun Red Ball tennis as well as goodies and prizes for all the junior players. After enjoying lunch, players and parents are free to enjoy watching the professional players in action.

Hignett Competes in Corby

Totally Tennis coach and performance player Liam Hignett competed in the Mens singles at the British Tour Corby held at Corby Tennis Centre in Northamptonshire.

Hignett competed in the main draw and was up against sixth seed Lamar Bartley in his first match which he lost 7-6(4), 6-4. His next event is the British Tour Loughborough at the beginning of March.

Opt into this year’s Wimbledon Ballot for your chance to win tickets for The Championships 2019 that are taking place from Monday 1st until Sunday 14th July.

Players, who have not already joined as British Tennis members, need them to sign up to and take advantage of this free membership – click HERE for details. If you belong to an LTA Registered Venue, you can access the British Tennis Wimbledon Ballot, compete with a British Tennis Rating and stay on the ball with the latest news in British Tennis. The Lite membership is free to Juniors (aged 11 – 17 years) and Adults (18+) who play at Totally Tennis. Children (aged 4- 11) can join and have a Mini Tennis Rating and discount on kit but are NOT eligible for the Wimbledon ballot.

Hignett Gains LTA Level 3 Coaching Qualification

Performance player and coach Liam Hignett  has passed his Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Level 3 Coaching Qualification.

Current Hampshire & IOW County Championships Men’s champion, Hignett will be sharing his experience and expertise with players in the junior and adult programmes. He also offers private lessons as well as hitting sessions for performance players looking for that extra practice.

Hignett started playing at Totally Tennis from the age of ten in the junior performance squads and has gone on to win many titles as a junior and in then in the men’s competitions in both singles and doubles. He played at Wimbledon after winning the HSBC Road to Wimbledon county title and has represented Hampshire & IOW in various County Cup matches across several different age groups. He gained a tennis scholarship to Sherfield School via the club’s ongoing partnership with the school and won more titles with the school team.

He has been a volunteer coach at the club for several years and previously passed both his LTA Level 1 and 2 coaching awards. He has gained plenty of experience coaching juniors, adults and some of the performance players under the mentoring scheme working with all the coaches at the indoor centre. He has learnt many new skills as part of his level 3 course including how to coach beginners and improvers in groups and as individuals, understanding the basics of business management, the competitive structure in the UK and working with level 1 and 2 coaching assistants. Alongside the four modules Hignett undertook coaching experience with a mentor, compiled a portfolio and passed his final on court practical coaching assessment.

Hignett said, “I’m happy to have passed my level 3 course and looking forward to continuing to develop as a coach. I’m thankful to the coaches who have been giving me advice and pointers on how I can improve and also to tutors Nigel Long and Guy Leverton for a great course and for helping me to pass.”

Tennis Director Nigel Long said, ‘Unlike many other coaches having played to such a high level will really benefit Liam’s career as well as our players as he can now share all his playing experiences and tactical and technical knowledge. “

Hignett has also completed the LTA referee development course that enables him to run events at the club such as the recent LTA South West County Tour series. Hampshire County Cup Call Up For Hignett

Performance player and assistant coach Liam Hignett was part of the Hampshire & IOW Mens team that competed in the LTA Winter County Cup 2018 held at Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre in Cambridge at the end of last month.

Hignett (pictured front left) was joined in the Hampshire team by Julian Godfrey, Robert Mitchell, Ryan Golesworthy, George Houghton, Michael Johnson, Paul Scullard, Jake Norris and Austin Gwilliam who completed in the Mens Group 4b competition against teams from Durham & Cleveland, Leicestershire and the Channel Islands.

On the first day the Hampshire team were up against the Durham & Cleveland team and lost 6-3. Hignett won his singles match 6-2, 6-2 but lost his doubles match with partner Jake Norris 6-3, 6-4. Day two was much better result with Hampshire beating Leicestershire 6-3. Hignett won his singles and his doubles match with Norris with both matches having the same 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

On the final day Hampshire notched up another win against the Channel Islands 5-1. Hignett maintained his singles clean sheet winning his final match 6-4, 6-0 and was not required to play his doubles match with Norris as the tie was already decided. Overall the team finished in second place with four points and retained their position in the league while winners Durham & Cleveland, with six points, gained promotion.

Hignett also competed in the Open Mens Singles at the LTA British Tour Edgbaston 2 held at The Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham. Sixth seed Hignett beat Benjamin Stanford in the first round 6-2, 6-1 and then Alex Griffiths in the second round  7-6(4), 6-3 but then lost in the quarters to fifth seed Matthew Hollingworth.

 

 

 

 

Runner-up place for Harry Feast on home turf

Performance player Liam Hignett run the 16 & under Boys singles event of the LTA South West Summer County Tour held at the indoor centre on Saturday.

Nine players entered in total including three from Totally Tennis; Harry Feast (1), Ollie Brown (4) and Joshua Furneaux (3). All three home players benefited from a bye in the first round then top seed Feast beat William Morrell (North Lonsdale Tennis Club) 4-0, 4-0 in the quarters followed by club mate Brown in the semis 4-0, 4-3(2) before losing in the final to second seed Thomas Russell (Benson Tennis Club) in a close match 4-3(4), 4-3(4).

Brown defeated Luca Sassow (Winchester Racquets and Fitness) in the quarters 4-1, 4-3(2) and third seed Furneaux beat Cameron Marshall (Liphook Lawn Tennis Club) in his quarter final match 4-2, 4-1 before losing to Russell in the semis 4-2, 4-1. Fourth seed Brown then beat Furneaux in the third/fourth place play-off match 4-1, 4-1.

Hignett said of the event, “All matches were played in good spirit and were enjoyable to watch. The final in particular, won on a sudden death 4-4 point in the tiebreak of both sets, brought an exciting end to the tournament. Well played everyone.”
