Rushbrook Results

The Rushbrook brothers, Jack and Harry both had a busy tennis weekend competing in different tournaments. On Saturday, older brother Jack competed in the 10 & under mixed singles event at the Grade 5 Kingsley Indoor Super Saturday Tournament held at Kingsley Dome in Borden, which was played in the compass draw format. In the quarter finals, Jack was beaten by Harry Blair in a very close match not reflected by the final score of 4-2 and Jack moved into the Consolation Draw. In the semi-finals Jack beat Andrew Penney 4-2 followed by Harry Morrogh in the Consolation final 4-2 to win the event. IMG_1870

On Sunday, both boys played in the Portsmouth Tennis Centre in a Grade 6 Red and Green Match Play tournament. Jack competed in the 10 and under mixed singles winning all four of his twenty minute matches beating Alice Turner-Hall 4-2, Axel Blakey 7-2, Katherine Gillett 5-1 and Thomas Phillips 6-0. In the 8 and mixed singles under, Harry won four and lost two matches. He defeated Isabelle Pycroft 10-6, Oliver Cole 11-9, Alfie Hand 10-7, Max Fitzgerald 10-6 and lost against James Millham in a close match 11-9 and Josef Gibson 10-3. With these results Harry has now progressed to a Red 2.

Rushbrook’s Serve up the Results

Mini Performance player Harry Rushbrook played in his first Grade 6 Mini Red ball 8 and Under Mixed Singles at the Virgin Active Hampshire Health and Rackets club in Southampton and did really well winning five out of his six matches. He beat Daisy Bannister 10-4, Harry Byles 11-9, Samuel Hutchin 10-7, Charlie Donnison 10-3, Marcin Kornijczuk 10-7 and only losing against Robin Hart 10-2.

Older brother mini performance player Jack competed in the Green 10 and under mixed singles also at Southampton winning all his twenty minute matches. Jack defeated William Donnison 4-1, Charlotte Fuller 5-1, Finn Hill 8-0, Luke Norton 4-3 and Thomas Phillips 6-2.

The following day Jack played at Greenacre Health and Fitness Club competing in the 10 & Under Grade 5 Mixed County Tournament playing in the compass draw format. In the quarter finals he beat Harry Storey 4-2 followed by a defeat in the semi-finals 4-1 by Jack Graham. In the third/fourth playoffs Rushbrook beat Jack Craik 4-1 to finish in third place overall.

Wessex Heartbeat Win for U14 Boys

The Totally Tennis Boys Under 14 team, who are in Division 1, won their first match of the new Wessex Heartbeat Winter Junior League at the indoor centre at the weekend. The team of Andrew Dingwall, Harrison Feast, Chris Bundhoo and Josh James beat the team from Thornden Tennis Club 4-2.

In the singles, the Totally Tennis team won two matches and lost two. Feast beat Leon Chatterton in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 10-6, Bundhoo defeated James Ardley 6-1, 6-1, Dingwall was beaten by Thomas Flynn 6-2, 6-1 and James lost against William Flynn 6-4, 6-3. With the scores level there was all to play for in the Doubles and the team played really well with Dingwall/Feast beating T.Flynn/Chatterton 6-3, 6-3 and Bundhoo/James defeating Ardley/W.Flynn in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 to win the match overall. Congratulations Boys!

Participating alongside Totally Tennis and Thornden in Division 1 are teams from Avenue Lawn Tennis Club, Avondale Tennis Club and Winchester Racquets and Fitness Club. The Wessex Heartbeat Winter Junior League is a county competition and a percentage of the entry fee from each of the participating clubs goes towards the Wessex Heartbeat Foundation.

Adult Tennis Summer League Update: Mens A Team Promoted to Divison 1.

Totally Tennis Men’s A team won the Division 2 title in the Basingstoke and District Tennis summer league and will be promoted to play in Division one next summer. The team of Simon James/Tim Rice and Ali Olrog/Ben Jubin beat Andover B with an impressive 8-0 and the team also beat Beechdown A and Odiham with 8-0 score lines. The team keep a season clean sheet winning all seven matches played with a season total of 14 points (52 games won and only losing 4).

The two Hampshire Court teams completely dominated Division 4 both finishing on 16 points overall but the B team took top honours with more games won. Totally Tennis Men’s B were a respectable fourth overall with 9 points, winning four matches, drawing two and losing three. The Totally Tennis Ladies A team finished in sixth place in Division two with a total of 5 points. They won one match with the team of Emma Barnes/Sharon De Botte and Hilary Oliver/Stephanie Hart beating Sherborne 8-0 and they drew three and lost three overall. Mortimer A were the division winners with 11 points.

In the Mixed, Totally Tennis A also finished in fourth place overall with 7 points, winning three matches, drawing one and losing three. Tim Rice/Emma Barnes and Rex Groves/Stephanie Hart completed their season with an 8-0 win against Overton B and a 6-2 result at Beechdown B. Aldermaston A won the Division with a total of 13 points. Totally Tennis B team were sixth with 6 points after winning two, drawing two and losing three matches.

Head Coach James McIntosh said “Congratulations to the Mens A team for a fantastic summer season and a well deserved promotion to the top division next summer. It’s great to have so many of our players competing in the local leagues and good luck to everyone in the current Winter leagues.”

Boys in Action In Club Match Play

The Totally Tennis performance players in action at the recent Hampshire Club Match Play Boys singles. The Grade 6 event was for players who are 18 and under (competing in their respective age groups) and rated 6.1 – 8.2. The matches were held at Virgin Active Hampshire Health and Racquets Club in Southampton.

Alex Dawson won both his matches beating Matthew Young 4-2, 4-1 and Douglas Trimmer 4-2, 4-1. Dylan Allenby-Ryan also won two matches defeating Oliver Moore 4-2, 4-2 and Jonathan Rawat 4-2, 4-1. Matthew Berry won one of his matches against Rio Moss 4-1, 4-0 but lost out to Joseph Chambers 4-0, 4-0.

Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

Totally Tennis held it’s World’s Biggest Coffee morning event in support of Macmillan Cancer Support alongside the clubs’ regular Friday Ladies Morning session. The ladies enjoyed the drills and matchplay session followed by coffee and cakes, with the club raising just over £80 to contribute to the charity’s goal to meet its 2014 target. The club has been a regular supporter of this annual event, raising money to donate to the charity which improves the lives of people and their families affected by cancer.

IMG_7032The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest charity fundraising event raising money to enable the charity to provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care in this country. The money raised at events like the coffee morning funds vital services and enables the charity to work alongside people affected by cancer and improve cancer care, making a real difference in people’s lives. One in three of us will get cancer. Two million of us are living with it. If you are affected by cancer, Macmillan can help.

Hampshire Court Adult Programme

The Totally Tennis adult coaching programme at Hampshire Court has many opportunities for players to improve both their tennis and fitness. Under the leadership of coach Shyam Vithlani and the team of coaches, who are all LTA qualified and licensed, coach sessions for players of all abilities, from beginner to advanced. This week sees the start of a new adult beginners course on Thursday 11th September.

A step by step course designed to help players learn or improve their game. Players are provided with a sound knowledge of the basic strokes and tactics and by the end of the course confidence on the tennis court will be improved.

Cardio Tennis (C)

Cardio Tennis is for the fitness enthusiast. Each session has a series of tennis-based drills and activities played to up-tempo music on the tennis court. It does not require amazing tennis skills as it’s all about keeping your heart rate up, burning calories and having fun. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant as the main purpose is to get fit.

Wednesday 6:30pm – 7:30pm and Thursday 7:30pm – 8:30pm.

Cost: Free to HC members

This Ladies only session provides a healthy mixture of coaching and social matchplay. An excellent opportunity to enjoy tennis in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Adult Drills sessions are highly energetic, designed to increase overall fitness and improve a player’s game. An excellent way to practice strokes and tactics.

Club sessions provide match play in a relaxed atmosphere for club members.

Match Play (C)

Designed for the more experienced player who wants to add something new to their game, not working too much on the basic shots but teaching more specialised strokes and tactics for doubles and singles. Players who are not confident on the basics should try the beginner’s course first.

Adult Club Night

This session helps players to improve all aspects of their game. Each session will consist of a tactical theme which will be coached through a series of drills and open games; this will then be put into practice with matchplay.

Friday 7pm – 9pm

Cost: FREE to HC members

Private lessons are available for individuals or as a group. Private lessons provide players with the opportunity of more tailored coaching with the added advantage of flexible lesson times.
