Varying Success for Totally Tennis Girls in Christmas Tournaments

Totally Tennis performance players Isla Hignett and Tillie Reid were 16 & under Girls Doubles runners up at the Grade 3 Eastleigh Open held between Christmas and New Year. The pair beat Sienna May and Grace Williams 4-1, 4-0 but lost against Diana Mascenikova and Leontina Slovak 5-3, 4-1 to finish in second place overall.

Hignett also competed in the 16 & under Girls singles where she defeated Liliana Fleming in the first round round 6-1, 7-6(0) before losing in the quarters against Mascenikova 7-5, 6-4. In the 14 & under Girls singles event Hignett was knocked out in the semis by Williams 6-1, 3-6, [1-0](9) and Reid won the consolation event beating Lucy Peer 4-1, 4-0 in the final.


Before Christmas fellow performance player Jasmin Bromilow and her partner Graziella Barrett were runners-up in 18 & under Girls Doubles at the White Horse Indoor Junior Winter Tennis Tournament in Oxford. Bromilow/Barrett beat Jasmine Conway and Daniela Kotara in the quarters 5-4(4), 4-5(2), [1-0](8), Leontina Slovak/Rachel Barnett 5-3, 4-2 in the semis before losing in the final against Jessica Matthews and Imogen Haddad 3-5, 4-1, [1-0](5). Bromilow also competed in the 18 & under Girls singles but was knocked out into semi finals but her doubles partner and eventual runner-up Graziella  4-0, 4-0.

Hignett and Reid also competed in this Grade 4 event finishing as 18 & under Girls consolation runners up. They lost to Matthews/Haddad in the quarters of the main draw 5-4(4), 4-5(2), [1-0](8) and then beat Izabella Harte and Lara Frank 4-2, 4-0 in the consolation semi-final before losing in the final against Conway/Kotara 4-0, 4-0.

Half Term Runners-Up Title for Hignett and Reid

Totally Tennis performance players Isla Hignett and Tillie Reid were runners-up in the 14 and under Girls Doubles event held at the David Lloyd Southampton October Half Term Tournament. In the round robin event the girls played three matches beating Magda Kornijczuk and Thea Sprawson 4-1, 4-1, Grace Williams and Katy Jarvis 5-3, 4-2. but lost to overall winners Paulina Jurkowska and Annalise Smith 4-0, 4-2. 

The pair were also third in the Haslemere 16U Doubles Winter County Tournament held earlier this month. In the quarters, the girls beat Giulia Lesa and Valentina Carrier 4-1, 4-2 but unfortunately then lost in the semis to eventual runners-up Grace Williams and Katy Jarvis 4-3(4), 4-2. The girls went onto win the third/fourth playoff match beating Kira Turpin and Elle Wright 4-0, 4-0 to finish in third place overall.

Amazing success for Totally Tennis players at Junior County Championships

Totally Tennis performance players are celebrating after a very successful week at this year’s Hampshire & IOW Junior County Championships 2017 held at the Winchester Racquets And Fitness club last week.


Dean Cooper Kirby won an impressive four titles; the 14 & under Boys Singles, the 16 & under Boys Singles as well as both the 14 & under and 16 & under Doubles titles with partner Alfie Reynolds. Fellow Sherfield School tennis scholars Liam Hignett and Daniel Prickett were also winners; Hignett won three titles and was crowned Men’s singles champion, 18 & under Boys singles champion and the 18 & under Boys doubles title with partner Jake Norris. Prickett won the 12 & under Boys Singles event and was also runner-up to Cooper Kirby in the 14 & under Boys Singles.


Isla Hignett was runner-up in the 16 & under Girls Singles after losing to Magda Kornijczuk in the final 6-0, 6-1, Kornijczuk had also beaten clubmate Jasmin Bromilow in the semis 6-0, 6-1. Kirsty Da Silva won the 14 & under consolation final and Hignett and clubmate Tillie Reid were third in the 14 & under Girls Doubles after beating Da Silva and Bromilow in the playoff match 4-0, 4-0. In his first green tournament Dylan Cooper Kirby was third in the 10 & under Boys Doubles with partner Ami Talpallikar. Harry Feast won the 14 & under Boys singles consolation final beating Leo Gamon 6-1, 6-4.

Mixed Success For Players In Winchester

Totally Tennis performance players were in action last week at the Winchester Babolat Open 2017 held at the Winchester Racquets And Fitness club with varying levels of success.

Dean Cooper Kirby picked up one winners and two runners-up trophies at the event held last week. He won the 16 and under Boys Doubles with partner Alexander Pearch (pictured below) defeating Edwin Lau and Anirudhha Hazarika in the quarters 6-4, 4-6, [1-0](7) and then Thomas Horsley and Lleyton Scott 4-6, 6-3, [1-0](8) in the semis. In the final they beat Henry and Louis Bowden 6-0, 7-6(3).

20170816_165902In the 18 and under Boys singles, Cooper Kirby was the runner-up after losing in the final to Henry Bowden 6-1, 6-1. After a bye in the first round Cooper Kirby beat Archie Hillier 6-3, 6-3 in the second round, David Brehme in the quarters 6-3, 1-6, [1-0](2) and club and school team mate Miles Bromilow 1-6, 6-3, [1-0](6) in the semis. Bromilow also had a bye in the first round and then defeated Otto Schlüter 6-1, 4-6, [1-0](6) in round two and Alfie Reynolds 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters before losing to Cooper Kirby.


In the 18 and Under Boys Doubles Bromilow and Cooper Kirby joined forces beating Joshua Davis-Lye and Luke Strivens in the semis 4-2, 5-3 but fishing as runners-up after losing to Bowden and Daniel Webb in the final 4-0, 5-4(7).

Liam Hignett won the Open Men’s Singles consolation final beating 18 and under Boys winner Bowden 6-0, 6-0. Hignett teamed up with Open Mens Singles winner Louis Allen in Open Mens Doubles and after a bye in the first round the boys lost in semis against Miles Mcdowall and Harvey Reed 4-6, 6-3, [1-0](6).

IMG_5436After a bye in the first round of the 14 and under Girls Singles Isla Hignett beat Mia Sibley 7-6(4), 6-0 in the quarters before losing to eventual overall winner Jessica Longjohn 6-2, 6-2 in the semis. Clubmate Jasmin Bromilow lost in her first round match against Katy Jarvis 6-3, 6-1. In the 16 and under Girls Singles Hignett beat Ellie Black in the first round 6-3, 6-1 but then lost in the quarters to Orla Cooper 6-0, 6-0.  Bromilow was beaten in her first round match by Emma Stewart 6-4, 6-1

In the 16 and under Girls Doubles, Hignett and Bromilow lost in the quarter finals against Jessica Longjohn and Katy Jarvis 4-2, 2-4, [1-0](10) but won the 18 and Girls Doubles consolation final beating Mia Sibley and Gabriella Lindley 5-3, 4-1. 




AoC Sport 2016 National Championships

Queen Mary’s College (QMC) players Kelsey Mosquera and Luke Watts represented the college in the Mixed Doubles event at the recent AoC Sport (the leading organisation for college sport and physical activity in the UK) 2016 National Championships.IMG_2691The tennis competition was held at the Silksworth Tennis Centre with competitions in men’s and women’s singles, doubles and also mixed doubles. The QMC pair finished as runners-up overall after losing to Greenhead College Huddlesfield, Yorkshire in their first Group A match and again in the final after it went to a shoot out.

The college sport National Championships, now in its 38th year, is one of the largest annual sporting events in England involving over 1,800 college students and 200 staff from across England, Wales and Scotland. This year’s three-days finals took place in Tyne and Wear across fifteen different sports including tennis, badminton, swimming and trampolining.

Students qualified for the championships through regional tournaments that took place in the autumn term, as well as competing in their chosen sport, students compete for points for their region. The region whose teams and individuals accumulated the most points won the prestigious Wilkinson Sword trophy which was won this year by the South West region (who retained the trophy from 2015) with 309 points followed by the South East in second place with 279 points overall.


Another Win For Isla Over Easter

Totally Tennis performance players Liam and Isla Hignett were in action over the Easter Holidays at the Grade 3 Winchester Spring Open competing in both singles and doubles events.

Isla and partner Eliza Wheeler were the winners of the Girls 12 & under doubles event beating Lottie Forsyth and Emma Goodacre in the semis 4-1, 4-0 followed by Francesca Davis and Zara Burney in the final 2-4, 4-0, 1-0(5) to win the event and collect the trophies, well done girls!unnamedIn the 12 & under singles Isla finished as runner-up. After a bye in round one she beat Katy Jarvis 6-1, 6-0 in the quarters and Lilac Jervis 6-4, 6-2 in the semis but lost to Davis (whom she beat in the doubles final) 6-0, 6-1 to take second place overall.  In the 14 & under singles event she won her first match against Maria Ivanova 1-4, 4-0, 1-0(8) but then lost in the second round to eventual runner up Annabelle Davis 4-0, 4-0. In the 14 & under doubles Isla teamed up with Emma Stewart and after losing their quarter final match against Anna Vinnell and Magda Kornijczuk 4-2, 5-4(5) they won the consolation final beating Celeste Crosby and Zoe Upcraft 4-1, 4-1.l

Older brother and Sherfield School tennis scholar Liam competed in the 18 & under and Mens singles events reaching the semi-final stage in both events, losing to the eventual winner in the men’s and the overall runner up in the 18’s. After a bye in round one of the 18’s he defeated Nathan Rochelle 6-2, 6-3 in round two, Louis Allen 2-6, 6-4, 1-0(10) in the quarters but lost against eventual runner-up Oliver Dixon 6-1, 6-0 in their semi-final match. In the Open Men’s singles competition, Liam had a bye in round one then beat Ivan derrick 6-2, 6-2 in round two, Cameron Alexander in the quarters 6-2, 6-3 but lost in the semis to overall winner Tommy Cartledge 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(6).


Liam also competed in the 18 & under doubles with partner  Jin Zizheng. After another bye in the first round the boys beat Max Holland and Harry Neate in the quarters but lost to eventual runners-up Mark Laishley and George Barfoot in a three set semi-final encounter 4-1, 4-14-0, 4-2. In the Men’s doubles Liam partnered Gwilliams and they finished as in the runner-up spot of the round robin competition beating Dylan Allenby-Ryan and Aaron Blackman 4-0, 4-1 but losing against George Houghton and Alexander (who Liam beat in the singles) 4-1, 5-4(6).

Liam also played in the Grade 3 Tennis Solutions Masters Open at the David Lloyd in Bristol playing in Open Men’s singles event. In the first round he defeated Andrew Lumb 6-1, 6-0, Joel White 6-1, 6-2 in the quarters but lost to eventual winner Robert Leck 6-3, 6-4 in the semis finishing in fourth place overall after losing the third/fourth playoff match against Alex White 6-1, 6-3.

Aaron’s Amazing Summer of Results

Young Totally Tennis player Aaron Dawson has had a very success summer of tennis in various tournaments in both singles and doubles competitions. Back in late July he competed in the Grade1 Summer National Tour Finals 2015 – 10 and under Invitational held at the West Hants Club in Bournemouth where he finished in a very respectable 6th place. In his first match he beat Tibet Hanedan 4-0, 5-4(0) but then had a tough second match against Benjamin Johnson which went to three sets and he just missed out after narrowly losing in the championship tie-break 2-4, 5-3, [1-0](7) causing him to miss out on a playing for a 1-4 position. In the play off 5th To 8th final Dawson lost against Jay Darvay 4-2, 4-2 to finish in sixth place.

Aaron NationalsIn the 30th Eastleigh Open held at the Virgin Active Hampshire Health and Racquets Club Dawson competed in both the Grade 3 Boys 12 and under doubles and singles events. He was crowned doubles winner with partner Dean Cooper-Kirby after they defeated Franko Stoman and Pieter-Roux Olivier in the quarter finals 4-0, 4-1, Joe Eales and Matthew Nice in the semis 5-3, 4-2 and then Harrison Macdonald-Taylor and George Shields 4-2, 4-1. In the singles event he had a bye in the first round and was then beaten by doubles partner Cooper-Kirby in the second round 6-0, 6-4. In the consolation draw he won the semi-final after beating William Moore 4-0, 4-1 in the semis and then won the event defeating Nishant Talpallikar in the final 4-2, 4-1.

Aaron Eastleigh Open U12 doublesIn the annual Hampshire & IOW Junior County Championships 2015 held at the Winchester Racquets And Fitness, Hampshire Dawson competed in three events. In the 10 and under Boys singles he finished as runner-up after losing to former clubmate Daniel Prickett in the final 4-2, 4-2. He had a bye in the first round and then defeated Spencer Hayes 4-0, 4-0 in the second round, Toby Blackwell 4-0, 4-2 in the quarters and the Jack Curtis 4-1, 4-1 in the semi-finals. In the 12 and under singles he had another bye in the first round and then beat Samuel Blackwell 4-0, 4-0 in round two but again nemesis Cooper-Kirby (who won the event overall) beat him in the quarters 5-4(2), 4-0. In the Boys 12 and under doubles Dawson and partner Bill Eales lost in the quarter finals against Zach Corner and Samuel Blackwell after a three set battle 1-4, 5-3, [1-0](5). In the consolation event, they lost to winners Toby Blackwell and Prickett 4-2, 5-4(3) in the semis.

In the Portsmouth Tennis Centre Boys 12 and under Grade 5 ranking tournament Dawson was declared the winner. In the quarters he defeated Hugo Pennant and Sterling Blakey in the semis with the same 4-0, 4-0 scorelines and finsihe with a another 4-0, 4-0 victory in the final against George Richardson. The amazing summer of hard work and results paid off as Dawson has achieved his 8.2 rating already whilst still Under10s and has now moved up to Under12s. Congratulations Aaron 😉
