Totally Tennis performance players Dean Cooper Kirby along with siblings Liam and Isla Hignett travelled to Nottingham to compete in the Grade 1 Junior National Tennis Championships 2018 held at Nottingham Tennis Centre.
Accompanied by coach Jordan Frederick, Cooper Kirby played in 14U Boys Singles event where his first round opponent was second seed Roan Jones who is number 2 for his age group in the UK and a team GB player. Even though he won the first set 6-2, Cooper Kirby lost the second set 6-0 and then fought hard in the close tie-break set before eventually losing 7-6(3) to make an early exit from the competition.
Brian Cooper Kirby said, “Jordan accompanied Dean to the event and witnessed him totally controlling the first set before taking his foot off the gas in the second. In the deciding set Dean and Roan were neck and neck with most of the spectators watching the game.” He added “Dean was level 4-4 serving to take lead but was broken by Roan to lead 5-4 and serving for match, Dean stepped up again and broke Roan to level 5-5 then they both won their next games to level the set 6-6 for a set tie-breaker which Dean lost 7-3”
Cooper Kirby has now left the UK having made a permanent move to Florida to train full-time at the Gomez Tennis Academy in Naples, Florida and attend a school linked to the academy based in Fort Myers.
Liam competed in the 18U Boys Singles but also lost in the first round against third seed Daniel Martin 6-1, 7-6(4). He then played in the 18U Boys Doubles with partner Kyle Stocker but the pair were knocked out in the first round by Deji Thomas-Smith and Patrick Young with a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline. Younger sister Isla played in the 16U Girls Doubles competition partnered with Maisie Wood and together they were beaten in their first match by Jessica Dawson and Jayanne Palma 6-2, 6-3.

Nine players entered in total including three from Totally Tennis; Harry Feast (1), Ollie Brown (4) and Joshua Furneaux (3). All three home players benefited from a bye in the first round then top seed Feast beat William Morrell (North Lonsdale Tennis Club) 4-0, 4-0 in the quarters followed by club mate Brown in the semis 4-0, 4-3(2) before losing in the final to second seed Thomas Russell (Benson Tennis Club) in a close match 4-3(4), 4-3(4).

Brown defeated Luca Sassow (Winchester Racquets and Fitness) in the quarters 4-1, 4-3(2) and third seed Furneaux beat Cameron Marshall (Liphook Lawn Tennis Club) in his quarter final match 4-2, 4-1 before losing to Russell in the semis 4-2, 4-1. Fourth seed Brown then beat Furneaux in the third/fourth place play-off match 4-1, 4-1.
Hignett said of the event, “All matches were played in good spirit and were enjoyable to watch. The final in particular, won on a sudden death 4-4 point in the tiebreak of both sets, brought an exciting end to the tournament. Well played everyone.”

July’s Tennis Tips
With the long school summer holidays starting at the end of this month it’s time to think about how to entertain the children in a fun yet active way. Totally Tennis has the perfect solution for parents looking to keep their children fit and healthy and burn off some of their energy.
The club will be running its popular tennis and multi-sport camps at the club in the War Memorial Park. The camps are a great way for juniors to improve their sports skills, fitness and make new friends. With indoor and outdoor courts available the fun continues whatever the British ‘summer’ weather has in store. *Sessions booked by 10th July will avail of 10% discount with the early booking offer.
Packed with opportunities to learn and play tennis, weekly afternoon activities also include basketball, football, rounders, hockey combined with lots of fun and games. The scheme has received OFSTED accreditation and the sessions are run by DBS checked and experienced LTA qualified and fully licensed coaches. Sessions will be available from Tuesday 24th July – Thursday 30th August.
Sessions can be booked for the Morning (9.00am – 12 noon), Afternoon (1.00pm –4.00pm) or Full Day* (9.00am – 4.00pm) and children can be dropped off from 8:30am. Please see booking conditions and sessions prices below including details of the special two and full week package offers.
Children need to bring packed lunches and drinks and be dressed appropriately for the weather (suncream if sunny, warm clothing if it’s cold) as they may be playing inside and outside.
*Children must be aged 5 years or over to stay for the whole day. Please note refunds will only be given with 72 hours notice. Those coming for a full day will be supervised during the lunch break and rackets will be provided for those who don’t have one. All children must be signed in and out at reception. Please ensure any medication/inhalers is readily available and staff have been informed prior to leaving the child/children. Totally Tennis mini performance player Hayden Cummings won the 10 and Under Mixed title at the South West Summer County Tour held at David Lloyd Southampton at the beginning of the month.
In the group stages, Cummings won Box C beating Zoe Totolici 4-1 and Thomas Allen-Green 4-0. Club mates Guhan and Gevin Chendhilkumar played in Box A and B respectively and both won and lost a match so all three boys progressed to the main draw.
In the quarter finals, Cummings defeated Guhan 4-0 and Kevin lost to Group D winner Oliver Cole 4-2. Cummings then beat Aleksander Kudla 4-0 in the semis and Finley Betteridge-Hanson 4-2 in the final to win the tournament.

Hampshire & IOW Junior County Championships 2017 – Cooper Kirby won an impressive four titles; the 14 & under Boys Singles, the 16 & under Boys Singles as well as both the 14 & under and 16 & under Doubles titles with partner Alfie Reynolds.
Fellow Sherfield School tennis scholars Liam Hignett and Daniel Prickett were also winners; Hignett won three titles and was crowned Men’s singles champion, 18 & under Boys singles champion and the 18 & under Boys doubles title with partner Jake Norris. Prickett won the 12 & under Boys Singles event and was also runner-up to Cooper Kirby in the 14 & under Boys Singles
