Annual Basingstoke Sports Awards

Totally Tennis performance player Liam Hignett may not have finished in the top three of the Junior Sportsmen category at last Friday night’s annual Basingstoke Voluntary Sports Council Awards but he didn’t leave empty handed. Hignett was awarded a scholarship from the sports trust for free membership to the Basingstoke Sports Centre along with a personal trainer, a t-shirt and a cheque for grant aid towards his coaching and tennis expenses.

Younger sister mini performance player Isla, attended the second part of the awards last night, the Mayors reception at the Civic Offices where she also received a cheque for grant aid donation presented by mayor Roger Gardiner. She then joined fellow local sportsmen and women to celebrate their sporting achievements and enjoyed a buffet.

The annual Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards event is a highlight of the local sporting calendar organised and hosted by sports council chairman Kevin Laing. The awards, which have been going for over twenty-five years celebrate the success of clubs, teams, coaches, officials, volunteers and individuals involved in sport in the Basingstoke and Deane area. Alongside the awards and scholarships, sportsmen and women can receive funding like the Hignetts, via the Sports Grant Aid scheme, which is funded by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. The funds can be used to help with everything from travelling and coaching expenses to competition entry fees, equipment and clothing requirements.
