World Tennis News: Cilic beats Murray in Cincinnati Masters

British number one and two time Olympic champion Andy Murray’s unbeaten run was  ended by Croatian Marin Cilic in the Cincinnati Masters final. Murray’s career best of twenty-two matches was broken by the 6-4, 7-5 defeat.

Murray won the event in 2008 and 2011 and was hoping to make it third time lucky the year ahead of the start of the US Open, it was Cilic’s first title of 2016. Head-to-head Murray has nine wins over Cilic’s three in their fourteen meetings.

The US open starts on Monday 29th August at Flushing Meadows with Murray named as second seed in the men’s singles draw, top seed is world number one and defending US Open champion Novak Djokovic. British ladies number one Johanna Konta has been named as thirteenth seed in the women’s singles, a career-high after a very successful summer. Serena Williams has been named as top seed and injury stricken Laura Robson will play fellow Brit Naomi Broady in the first round after beating Tatjana Maria 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 in the final round of qualifying.

Heather Watson, Kyle Edmunds, Dan Evans and Aljaz Bedene will all also compete in the forthcoming final Grand Slam of the year.
